School Days, School Days...

Freshly sharpened pencils, the smell of new crayons, the crack of that new text book and crisp fall weather on the horizon. Well, three out of four's not bad. It's back to school time at our house!

As of this week, our school year has started in earnest. The public school students went back on Monday so I suppose it's time. In reality we only took a few weeks off here and there this summer. I've had it in my mind that we were a little behind due to the many moves of last year. Looking back though, I don't think we were any more behind than the year we evacuated for 3 hurricanes in a row. Now that was an interesting year! I think we were still finishing that year's math well into October of the following year.

Sully is sailing through the first chapters of his 6th grade math book and Nathan is already well into the second unit of his first grade reading program. So, I'd say we're off to a beautiful start. Our mornings are very full and both boys are, for the most part, cooperating quite nicely with the more rigorous work load. There are some parts of school they love and can't wait to do- the read alouds, science projects, history lessons and field trips and then there are some that leave them wishing it was summer break all the time. Don't we all!

I've been having a good time lately watching the boys and realizing that Nathan is older now than Sully was when he came along. When I think about Sully back then, he seems to have been so little while Nathan sometimes seems to be so big. I have to take a step back to see him as the little guy he is. I find myself battling with Nathan over some of the same things Sully used try but has thankfully grown out of. I remember being so frustrated and thinking that we'd never get through. Funny though, with the second child, I know it's only a season and will eventually come to an end.

The boys are participating in a play about Esther this semester with Kids Klub and I've signed up to organize the weekly games. My little thespians are looking forward to the show. We're taking a half day tomorrow (What ALREADY?) to swim with friends and will set up a time for an honor class we're planning to do on a monthly basis with these very friends.

The only thing I miss during this time of year is the pending autumn weather. We don't really get that down here. Back-to-school to me always meant buying some new fall and winter outfits that were too hot to wear during the first weeks of school but the reprieve of cool weather was at least in sight. Sweater weather is my favorite. To combat my longing for fall we'll be making a trip up to visit family in a couple of months when the weather and leaves have turned. For now, well turn our attentions to the school year and perhaps read some "fallish" books.

Music Makers

Today was the first day of band for Sully and recorder for Nathan (and me). For Sully, this is old hat and he predictably did a good job. He's taking beginning band to brush up on theory but is also playing sheet music with the concert band. It seems to be a good combination for him. Nathan was very excited about class and did very well. His class is a very gentle introduction to recorder and music theory. I really like the instructor. Nathan can now tell you what a staff, quarter note and quarter rest are and he can play a B and C. We practiced this evening and he didn't want to stop. There are 5 lines of music on his practice page and after playing line 2 he emitted a belly laugh and said, "That was SO fun!"

Birthday Party, Scouts and Indian Food

This was a full but fun Saturday. It started with an early scout meeting for Sully- the troop's yearly planning meeting, scheduled from 8 to 4. Wow! That must have been some meeting!! Boy Scouts is quite a different organization in comparison to Cubs- the boys are in charge so some things are... slightly less efficient- but a great learning opportunity!
Sully attended for only a few hours in the morning because a friend of both boys had a birthday party this afternoon. What a great party it was too! They rented a giant blow up water slide and between burgers, cake, presents and such the kids entertained themselves with sliding, squirt guns and water balloons. Both boys have come home tired. But the coolest thing about the party was that we were able to drop them off and enjoy a few hours of adult time. We were really spoiled last year in VA where both grandmas were so close. This was our first outing sans kids since we've been back in FL... we really need to find a good babysitter!
Other than just enjoying an uninterrupted conversation, Kevin and I had a good time rummaging at a church rummage sale, eating Indian food and perusing the health food store- okay, I loved all three and Kevin was happy with the Indian food. We also took a drive down by the beach where we found an open house. Real estate is still in a slump around here so there are lots of open house and reduced price signs out.
I'm typing today on our new-to-us toy. Kevin found a great deal on a laptop so we've upgraded. It amazes me that this tiny machine has so much more space and is so much faster than our big computer, which in it's defence is several years older than Nathan. I really like it!

Tubing

We just got back from a weekend of camping and tubing down the Itchetucknee River. What fun! The Iche River is a spring fed river that maintains a constant temperature of 72 degrees. In other words... it's cold! Or if you are an optimist- refreshing. We drove up on Friday evening and were able to set the tent up before dark. We spent the evening roasting hot dogs and marshmallows and met a relatively early bedtime. Our usual camping trips have been with cub scouts and our group tends to be the rowdy type that stays up late. We were up early so we could get a quick breakfast before heading out to get in line at the north entrance of the park.

The park only allows a certain number of tubers on the upper stretch of the river in order to maintain a more pristine natural state. After making it to the upper river, the kids were able to swim in one of the springs while we waited for the drivers to return from taking the cars down river. Once the drivers returned we headed for the river. Upon entering the water, the bigger kids, Sully included, caught the current immediately and were quite a distance in front of us for the first stretch, which took around 3 hours. We exited the river midway, where the cars were parked, and had a picnic before embarking on the second half of our journey.

The first portion of the river was so clear you could see the bottom. We used goggles to watch some of the wildlife underwater. The surrounding land was covered in various types of trees, cypress being among those I recognized, many draped in Spanish moss. We also saw turtles, fish and water birds including a wood stork. The kids in Sully's group enjoyed jumping off of fallen trees into the river more than appreciating nature. The outside temperature was quite warm, mid-nineties I think, but the water kept us cool so it was a very pleasant ride.

Kevin and I were trying to keep track of Nathan and to stay together as much as possible. This independent risk taker was sure to push our hands off as soon as we had hold of his tube. Kevin ended up hooking him from underneath with his feet. Nathan was in a tube with a bottom and was decked out in a life vest. We just discovered he can swim without floaties (a subject for another post) but weren't taking any chances with the river. The current was quite mild but no place for a novice swimmer.

After our run down the river we returned to the campsite and cleaned up just in time for a major storm. Kevin and I contemplated staying for about a minute and a half but after I picked up a pillow and water POURED out we decided to head home. We were home and sleeping in dry beds before 10 pm! All in all a really good trip.

Say Tomato

We finally went out to pick our tomatoes this afternoon. Actually the boys picked while I took pictures then I went through to get those they'd missed. I can't wait until our "regular" big tomatoes turn red. We have several and they are getting bigger every day but all are still green.

Masterpiece

Here are two of the pictures the boys worked on last week during their art classes.

The seascape is Nathan's handiwork and the portrait is the one Sully did and didn't like. I think he did a fabulous job. Both done in watercolor, which isn't the easiest medium to work with.

Free Movies, Art Camp and Ice Cream

I'm slacking on the posts here- it's been almost a week!
Our days last week were filled with art. (At least the kids' days were filled with art, mine were filled with the blessing of a quiet house.) The boys participated in art camp in the village where they painted and drew some fun pictures. It turns out the instructor is our neighbor and the last day was party day at her house where the kids had cake and ice cream and got to swim and canoe. We were able to walk down to the party and then some of the other moms came back to our house with me for a little "mom party"... you know, a little food and a lot of kids NOT running around yelling.
This summer must be slated for art classes because there is a weekly class running at the corner church and the boys attended the first one last week and will continue throughout the summer. Nathan's class is working with clay and they are making some really cute tiles- I think of the Garden of Eden. Sully's class is working on watercolor portraits I could really see the effort in his first painting. He didn't like it but he's awfully hard on himself. I'll try to remember to take photos of their artwork to post tomorrow.
For our weekend treat, Kevin drove us down to Ben and Jerry's where we all indulged in a little ice cream. We entertained ourselves with the pictures on the wall of the Vermonster and those who'd attempted to eat this monstrosity (pun intended).
Tomorrow, bright and early, we'll be heading down to the local movie theater to catch a free showing of Charlotte's Web. It's a great way to spend a hot summer morning and I understand that there are theaters all over that offer the same kind of free summer movie program. Our local bowling alley has a free summer program as well where the kids can bowl one free game per day all summer. We haven't been down there yet this year, but the summer is still young.

Ingenious Organizing Strategy...

... or REALLY dumb idea- you decide!

I'm not sure what made me think organizing Lego's would be a great family activity but here we are.

Kevin pulled out the camera to record our fortune in Lego's but after looking at these pictures I feel the need to explain the gross multitude. First, both boys love Lego's thus they are a popular request for Christmas, birthdays, and outings with grandparents as well as the end to the "I'm saving my money for" goal. So a portion of this pile is a 7 year collection. We were also blessed to be the recipients of a huge (and by huge, I mean HUGE) bin of Lego's from our former neighbors when their son went away to college.
We worked and sorted for a little over 4 hours (no I'm not kidding), the boys were getting tired and I was Lego-ed out but believe it or not as we were picking up Nathan asked if we could sort Lego's again as soon as we get up in the morning!!! Oh my! Needless to say we are not finished yet but the ultimate goal is to put all (or most) of the sets together, decide if any are past their playing prime and then have access to the favorites to hopefully end (or greatly decrease) the "I can't finds". We'll just have to see if it happens as soon as we get up.

I also want to point out the not-eating-Lego's-dog in the background. Good boy Duke!!!

Kid and Dog Stuff

How's that for an original title? I'm probably too tired to be blogging but I'll use that as an excuse if anything sounds lame or incomprehensible. What have we been doing this week? Well... really nothing all that exciting. The boys have both been plugging away doing school work- after our crazy year we (okay I) decided it would be best to school through the summer. We usually do some school work during the summer but we have a little heavier load this year. They finished early this afternoon and went next door to swim with the neighbor. Funny, we've been here 4 years and the pool next door has seen more action in a month under the new owners than the past 3 1/2 years under the previous owners. Kids! Ya'd think they like to swim or something! My boys are very fortunate that they have been invited over numerous times.

And the dog... trouble on a leash! Puppy Kindergarten this evening was exhausting. So much energy in one room! Duke did well but is very distracted by the other dogs and while he behaves "perfectly" while doing puppy push-ups in the comfort of our kitchen, he's a little harder to control with the temptation of play to the left, right and basically all around. We worked on sit, stand, down, roll-over and added "off" this week but I'm eager to get to the "stop pulling on the leash" class. He's really not terrible compared to Jesse who was all but unwalkable (a cougar might seem walkable compared to Jesse) but he's not a pleasure to walk yet. It's not too much to ask for a "pleasure to walk" type of dog, is it? I know they are out there... I've seen them. Grandma Kate and Wally have one! Hi Murphy, the boys miss you!

I think that's about it for this week so far... Father's Day is Sunday so the kids and I will be out shopping tomorrow. Hope everyone is having a good week!

Simple Fun

After reading this post over at Musings of a Housewife, I was reminded of all the simple things we used to love to do when I was a kid. Feeding the ducks, tossing rocks into the creek, climbing trees... So today was a day of simple fun...

Sprinkler fun...
Running...

Jumping...

And it wouldn't be complete with out a crazy pose!

Then there was serious sandbox fun...
Scooping...
Digging...

Dumping...

Then there's the "I'm 12 and too cool for the sprinkler or sandbox today but ask me tomorrow because I may just change my mind" fun...

First Day of School

Puppy Kindergarten, that is...
The whole family took Duke for his first training class this evening and what an adventure! He was the biggest goof and started out by making a spectacle of himself- barking and jumping at the other puppies.
Then class got started. We began in a circle with the dogs on leashes but directly after introductions the trainer said, "All dogs off leash, no one touch the puppies." I was sure she didn't mean our huge beast as he easily out-weighed every dog by at least 20lbs. Boy was I wrong! After a few nervous minutes of anticipation, thinking Duke would make a puppy pancake, I began to relax. He actually started to calm down a little and found a friend in the Boston Terrier, Lu-Lu. She put him in his place and they had a grand old time.
Notice the tiny, scared puppies in the background of these photos.

Next came Puppy Push-ups... these are the sit, down, stand and roll-over commands. Duke did an excellent job... He's gifted. The boys got in on the action and he listened to them amazingly well. After that, we traded puppies so they'd get used to being handled by different people and while watching Duke do sit and down for other people (one being a young girl) I decided there is hope for him yet. He's been very rotten around the house lately and I was beginning to wonder if we'd acquired a canine tornado that would never be tamed.
Here is Nathan demonstrating "stand" and Sully showing "sit".

After class Duke played with a Chocolate Lab who'd skipped the first playtime. Scooby was a little intimidated and Duke was obnoxious!

All in all a really good thing and we'll go back next week.

Boy Scout

Sully was recognized tonight for earning his scout badge. He received the patch almost a month ago but the Court of Honor was held tonight. Way to go Sully!!!

Endless Summer Fun

Is it officially summer yet? No? It's not really summer here either but in FL it's sometimes hard to tell. We have actually had incredibly beautiful days lately- either it's cooler and drier than normal or I've finally (after almost 8 years) gotten used to the weather.

The grass in the yard has made such a difference in my desire to be outside. I had no idea that I missed grass so much... and St. Augustine nonetheless! My first true introduction to this crazy FL grass was when we bought our first house here and I decided to do some yard work. Well, any good Virginia girl knows that grass is soft and thin and anything that looks like a thick grassy vine has got to be crabgrass. So I started pulling this crazy "weed" in our side yard... I pulled and pulled until I had a nice brown patch. Around that time Kevin came home and informed me that my "weed" was grass but I had already succeeded in stripping a huge portion of the side yard. Needless to say I learned my lesson. St. Augustine never looked so good!

Since the great outdoors has been so appealing since the installation of our lawn, the boys and I spent some time in the back yard doing what we've been doing a lot of lately... entertaining the dog. Nathan decided it was a great time to blow bubbles.

I love bubbles- they keep little ones occupied for hours! Apparently they also keep puppies occupied for a good long time too.

Hey! Bring on some more bubbles!!

Barbara Manatee and the Lizard Dog

One of the neat things about living in Florida is being able to enjoy some of what this East Coast Girl considers exotic wildlife... Manatee and very prevalent lizards. Sully noticed two manatee in the canal today but as soon as I made it back with the camera they were too far away to catch. I did, however, get this shot, which in my opinion is much cuter than an up-close of a manatee. If you look to the left of the first pier you'll see a disturbance in the water... that's the manatee.

As for the other wildlife... we've been overly occupied with all things puppy this week.
"Duke sit. Duke down. Duke no bite. Duke off. Duke leave it. Duke Ahhhhhhh!"
He's actually doing pretty well considering he's only been here for a week. He's out of his cone and headed to puppy school next week. I'll be glad to find out what to do with some of his less desirable habits... although he only climbed on the table once and at least it was the table outside.
He's also discovered lizards and really, really wants to catch one.

Look for a future post of the lizard fight I was able to catch on camera this afternoon.

Three more pictures

Here's a sweet picture of my mom and Sully before he had to go on stage.

Don't smudge! Even boys wear lipstick onstage...

but after I got a shot of Nathan with the gorgeous lips he insisted I take the following picture.

The Show Must Go On

And go on it did!
Just a quick post as we're trying to get everything together for an early departure tomorrow.
The boys had a great time and did a great job in their plays. I won't waste time on words tonight but you can see for yourself.

The Lightening Bug Pep Squad... All very cute. Nathan had such a good time he said he was sad it was over. He remembered his songs, lines and hand motions and was, of course, the cutest bug!

Sully has really come out of his shell onstage and LOVED being in the limelight. His part would be best described as comic relief and he pulled it off beautifully.

Nathan... the lamb

Break a Leg

Curtain call is almost here...
Opening night is this Saturday and both boys are very excited. Nathan, however, is somewhat nervous, this being his first official play. There was of course his first unofficial play Christmas before last where he played a lamb. He was supposed to sit with Sully, a shepherd, and look cute in his fuzzy lamb costume. But at our house we don't do anything halfway and he was very serious about his part. Opening night, he did sit and look cute in his fuzzy lamb costume but he also decided that lambs "baa" so he commenced with a litany of "baas" during his entire debut. We were all in stitches. Now, as a seasoned actor, he knows to stick to the script. I'll see if I can't find a picture of Nathan the lamb to post.
