Noises

Why are boys so fascinated and so amused with "those" noises? You know the ones I'm talking about. "Armpit" noises... whether they're made with an armpit or not. Nathan just ran up to me on his way to bed and proudly displayed his ability to make that noise behind his knee. He was excited to know that he didn't even have to use his armpit.

Interesting question. I think that it is not necessarily that the connection is boys=body noises. I think a lot of factors go into creating their fascination with burps, farts, etc. One is the American culture's rather negative view of the human body and almost everything about it; by imposing on it (by inference or directly) a naughty connotation, that gives it a certain appeal and shock value. We also (and every culture does this in its own way) raise our kids with certain expectations of "male" and "female" behavior, which leads to other behaviors we may not have foreseen as being part of the package. I have lived in a variety of vastly different cultures and can assure you that, in some of them, making a raspberry with an armpit or the back of the knee would either not cross the mind of a young boy or would be considered too silly to do. So, consider it an American boy act of minor rebellion, testing the limits, and getting away with a bit of naughtiness that isn't likely to bring harsh consequences.
